Final Video

Update on Filming

We've started filming our video and had about 3 hours of filming time in the practice room overall. Our main issue is having to hire out the room at a time that suits us but also when the music department is not needing it.

We still need to re-do some clips and also get some more for the ending of the video. We have run into a bit of a mess though as we had hired the room out for 2 1/2 hours this Wednesday just gone and our video needs to be finished for the friday of next week. We went the day before to check that it was still okay for us to use the room but as it turns out, all the teachers and technicians were going on strike and had to cancel the booking. I was really annoyed by this as their strike had affected our coursework because the room was fully booked until January of next year.

We are just going to have to use the footage that we have got and hopefully make some more stop motion that fits in with the mise-en-scene of the video to compensate.

Update on Filming

We started to film ana edit our video over the October holidays. We managed to get the first part of the video done however, Aaron (one of our group members) went away on holiday for two weeks. Antony and I then had to figure out a way that we could continue to film this video by ourselves outside but still include Aaron in this.

Our teacher suggested that we come up with a new concept and start to film again. This way we could make sure that we would have footage that includes Aaron. We decided to bring the filming indoors do that we could avoid the changing weather outside.

By the time we had done this and produced a storyboard, we only had a couple of weeks left to film the shots that we needed and edit the video to our best standard.

We booked time in one of the practice rooms in the music department at college. This would reflect the way that the Red Hot Chili Peppers use actual performance sites (a warehouse in 'Can't Stop' & a rooftop in 'The Adventures of Raindance Maggie').

Textual Analysis - RHCP Music Videos

Monarchy of Roses.

In the video “Monarchy of Roses”, the Red Hot Chili Peppers use a mixture of performance and a lot of stop animation styled work. We have looked at this and decided to use aspects of their music video in ours. To do this we will need a lot of performance, while also having cuts of stop animation. The song style is just what you expect from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the video matches their song brilliantly; this is true as the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a fun, unpredictable band that tries to make each and everyone of their videos unique. By having a unique image and sound they can be more appealing to many people, this is why we have chose one of their songs to make a music video with, and this is why our video will contain features of this particular clip. The use of black and white rather than a normal colour video is dramatic as it makes the mise-en-scene stand out from other videos.

Cant Stop

"Cant Stop" is the music video that we based our own video on, as we found the video very entertaining. Firstly, the mise-en-scene of the video is very basic but somehow, the Red Hot Chili Peppers manage to put there own twist on the video. The video is set in what looks like a warehouse, with plain white walls, apart from one feature wall which is painted bright orange to stand out. Random props are used such as empty bottles of water which have no relevance to the music video but add to the overall random vibe. At least 95% of the camera shots in the music video are still shots. These still shots are directed at the centre of the screen all of the time and there are no special effects involved in the music video which helps give the Red Hot Chili Peppers their down to earth feeling and helps the audience relate to them (Blumler & Katz 'Uses of Gratifications Theory' - Personal relationships)

Californication

This video is effective and fits in with the image of Red Hot Chili Peppers. the use of a video game as the overall theme relates to Blumler & Katz theory due to the way that is can act as a form of escapism. This is the main reason most people play video games in the first place. Their red logo is shown at the start of the video so that the audience can recognise this and the colour red is repeated throughout. The theory also relates to the way that they are travelling all over the world which is what many people dream of doing.

Our Video: Plans/ Location/ Props

Due to the way that the song 'Can't Stop' is based around Red Hot Chili Peppers' life and how they live it, we decided to use this theme and elaborate on it using a form of 'Race for Life'.

The beginning of our video is going to be of us in a field. The introduction of the song that last 23 seconds will be a build up to the race, as this part of the song builds up to singing and the other instruments that come into it. To start, there will be shots of things surrounding us such as the sky and plants to make it seem like a calm and relaxing location. Then it will progress to show us starting to stretch and preparing for the race. During this race, clips of us having a laugh while running this race will be shown to reflect the attitude of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Examples being me Aaron and Antony running while I ride past on my horse. We will also show clips of other things that relate to our 'Race for Life' theme by filming the M54 from a bridge running over it, in the dark so that there is more of an effect with the lights of the cars. We will speed this up to show the contant travelling of people.

We chose to use a field for our video as a location due to the vast space and the peaceful scenery. However, they are also known for sporting activities and so this is why we picked this as our location for this part of the video.

My horse will be one of the props needed. I ride him regularly and he is incredibly well behaved so I think he will do well within our video and create an effect of humour. We will also need to be wearing sports clothing that is known to be 'uncool'. Only one of us will do this as it will reflect the way that RHCP dress in the sense that they all dress completely differently but still stick to a theme.
